Vegetative marijuana fertilizing
After sprouting, cannabis plant starts vegetative phase and growers wonder what is the best fertilizer for marijuana growth? If growing marijuana in soil, you should water feed (no nutrients, no fertilizers) the plants for the first two weeks. Almost all good soils will contain enough fertilizer for the plant to feed on during that time. Plants are delicate at this stage and can go for a week or two with a minimal amount of food. After that you need to start using marijuana grow fertilizer. At the maximum, use a solution that is no more than 50% of the strength of the recommended level. That is, if the fertilizer manufacturer recommends mixing one tablespoon to every gallon of water, you should add less than half a tablespoon of nutrient to every gallon of water for the first two weeks after germinating. Do not give your plants extra fertilizer thinking it will make them grow faster. Too much will kill your plants. If you under fertilize, plants will take longer to grow but will not die. Follow the mixing instructions on the package, if you aren't sure, use less rather than more.

Vegetative phase means the plant will be photosynthesizing as much light as possible to grow tall and start many grow tips at each pair of leaves. Marijuana plants have a vegetative stage when they are growing as fast as possible after the plant first germinates from seed. It is possible to grow marijuana plants during vegetative phase with no dark period, and increase the speed of growth by 15-30%. Plants can be grown vegetatively as long as the grower wants. It is up to the gardener to decide when to force the plant to flower. Choose the right moment basing on your goals for yield, space and harvest time. Choose the best marijuana growth solutions for your investment.
During vegetative growth cannabis plants need lots of N (nitrogen). They also need a fair amount of P (phosphorus) and K (potassium). A plant food that is NPK 20-10-10, or NPK 30-15-15, or something similar, with trace elements should do a very good job if you grow with a darkness period every day. Keep lights on continuously for sprouts, since they require no darkness period like older plants. After first 2 weeks try to light the plants for 18 or more hours every day. A solution of 20-20-20 with trace minerals is used for soil gardening when growing continuously under lights.
The most important thing to remember is to introduce the fertilizer concentration to the plant gradually. Start with a fairly diluted fertilizer solution and gradually increase the dosage. Most fertilizers cause a pH change in the soil. Adding fertilizer to the soil almost always results in a more acidic pH. Use pH meter or pH indication slips to monitor soil pH. Add calcium or better dolomite to achieve higher pH and try keep it around neutral 7. A pH of 7.0 is neutral, values below 7.0 are acid, and those above are alkaline. The lower the pH the more acid is the soil. The higher the pH, the more alkaline. As time goes on, the amount of salts produced by the breakdown of fertilizers in the soil causes the soil to become increasingly acidic and eventually the concentration of these salts in the soil will stunt the plant and cause browning out of the foliage. Also, as the plant gets older its roots become less effective in bringing food to the leaves. To avoid the accumulation of these salts in your soil and to ensure that your plant is getting all of the food it needs you can begin leaf feeding your plant at the age of about 1.5 months. Dissolve the fertilizer in worm water and spray the mixture directly onto the foliage. The leaves absorb the fertilizer into their veins. If you want to continue to put fertilizer into the soil as well as leaf feeding, be sure not to overdose your plants.
Remember to increase the amount of food your plant receives gradually. Marijuana seems to be able to take as much fertilizer as you want to give it as long as it is introduced over a period of time. During the vegetative phase of cannabis plant life, fertilize your plants every few days. When you decide to start flowering you need to force you plants into flowering period and you need to switch to cannabis flowering fertilizer.
Epsom salts in amount of one table spoon, diluted in water, should be used to supply magnesium and sulfur minerals. Trace minerals are needed too and most modern cannabis specific fertilizers include them.
Force plant stems to be strong and thick, so they can support heavy flowering. Use an internal oscillating fan will reduce humidity on the leaves' stomata and improve the stem strength as well. Growroom air circulation will excersize the plants and make them grow stronger, while reducing many hazards that could ruin your grow.
Light is mandatory for good vegetative growth. Prevent sudden blackouts, too many hours of unexpected daylight, or light leaks, as these actions can cause the plant to become hermaphrodite. Plants will remain in a vegetative state until the introduction/lengthening of dark periods. It's totally up to you and your growing space/time to make a decision when to start forcing plants to flower.
