Cannabis plant life nutrients and fertilizing
Marijuana plants require food called nutrients or fertilizers to grow. There are three main components your cannabis needs: nitrogen N, phosphorus P, and potassium K. They play vital role in strong root development, fast vegetative growth, flowering, bud formation and high yields.
While germinating marijuana seeds it is not recommended to fertilize the soil, because fertilizers could burn fragile sprout and also because most good tomato soils come with proper NPK ratios and are able to provide your seedling with everything it needs for at least first 2 weeks. However, as the plant grows taller and wider, providing supplemental nutrients is necessary.

In the vegetative phase of plant life, a good cannabis 20 10 10 (or 20 20 20 if your lamps are 24h/24h on) NPK fertilizer is essential to maintain proper vegetative growth and development. Experienced growers dilute formula given by fertilizer manufacturer to one half or to one quarter strength, because cannabis does not tolerate full strength nutrient feedings well. Usually fertilizers solution is used twice a week, but some growers use it every day.
During flowering phase of cannabis life you need to provide your plants with a higher ratio of phosphorus in order to induce and support developing flowers, as they are the bud forming sites and their number has direct influence on yield. Use phosphorus alone or fertilizer with higher ratio of phosphorus, like 10 30 10 NPK to ensure excellent and rich budding. As time goes on the buds will get bigger and bigger and they will use more and more fertilizer from what you supply them.
Secondary nutrients for your marijuana plant are calcium, sulfur, and magnesium. They ensure intensive photosynthesis takes place, allowing strong growth and stable development. There are also trace minerals that cannabis plant needs: boron, copper, molybdenum, zinc, iron and manganese. Only minimal amount of those are needed, but they are essential to the overall well being of your plants. All these nutrients work together to maintain healthy plant development. Plants will grow poorly, stop or die in case of deficiency of any one of these nutrients. Learn how to identify cannabis plant nutrients deficiencies or overdose.
Careful checkup of your plants every week will allow you to determine if they are healthy and stable, or lacking any of these nutrients. Such problems are easily fixed, but correcting them is essential to plants well being, development and proper growth.
Stop fertilizing marijuana plants about 2 weeks before your estimated harvest time. During that period you want your plants to flush all remaining fertilizer residue from their systems in order to give you buds without any chemical components or fertilizer leftovers. Flush your plants heavily with fresh water in amount about 4 times greater than the pot size. This is important, because you want tasty, not harsh, healthy to smoke buds.
